The bookmobile visits locations in rural areas of Greenville County. Its collection provides the same material formats available at branch locations, including bestsellers and popular audiovisual materials. Patrons may request items from any library location to be routed to their bookmobile stop.
Residents learned how to download e-books onto inside the Digital Bookmobile on Wednesday at the William K. Sanford Library in Colonie. The 74-foot vehicle, which will be at the East Greenbush Community Library on Thursday, is on a nationwide tour to demonstrate broadband Internet-connected PCs, premium sound systems, and a variety of portable media players, all of which help visitors explore the library ebook download service.
After installation, you'll be shown the main menu screen and a list of things you can do with Bookmobile. You can access a library function where the app will connect with Librivox for free recordings of classic books, or you can import M4B audiobooks, download from iTunes, buy directly through iTunes, and much more. There is also a subscribe option so you can add the RSS feeds of your favorite podcast and create playlists. Playback is smooth and the interface is very mobile-friendly with a sleek, iOS 7-style layout and buttons. The use of bookmarks is perfect for quickly finding your favorite books, episodes, or parts of a file, and the app ran smoothly, without any hiccups during all of our tests.

Reserved items scheduled to be picked up from a bookmobile stop may be picked up at the main library during this time in the holds pick-up room. They will also be available for pick up at the scheduled bookmobile stop the following week. Extra time will be allowed for patrons to pick up reservations from the bookmobiles to avoid reserved items being pulled before they are available at the chosen location. For more information, contact the Bookmobile department.
The iTunes app on your computer also supports storing and syncing many other types of non-DRM files. These can be mp3 files coming from CDs, downloads from the Internet, or podcasts subscribed to in iTunes. These non-DRM files are transferred to your iOS device in the same way the DRM files are.
If you have a Dropbox account (or one of the other cloud storage systems), you can use their app to transfer audio files into Bookmobile. After you've uploaded files to the cloud, simply open the Dropbox app (for example), and tap on a file you want to import. After it has downloaded, tap the Share icon (square with arrow pointing up), then tap Open In... and select the Bookmobile icon. You will be presented with the options: Create New Audiobook... or Add to Existing Audiobook.... If you have individual audio files, you can create a new audiobook with the first file, and then add to it with the rest. Zip files are also supported, so you can zip up a whole set of audio files, including a cover artwork file, and import that using Dropbox.
There are many more sources of audiobooks on the Internet. Bookmobile can download/import audiobooks in several different formats from most web sources. The "Download Audiobooks" section in the "+" tab provides options for downloading mp3, zip and m4b files.
You can build up an audiobook made up of individual mp3 files, by entering the URL to one. After the first mp3 is downloaded, the app will ask if you want to add more mp3 files to the same book. The app will inspect the mp3 files for ID tags containing the actual book title and author to use for display.
M4B is an audiobook format that includes additional information, such as chapter locations, and book cover artwork in the audio content. To import an M4B audiobook, select the "Download M4B Audiobook" option, and enter the web URL to the file. The app will download and construct a part for each chapter.
Bookmobile will download from any accessible URL, which could be your local computer. If you have a web server set up, just point it at that. If you are running Mac OS X, and you are comfortable with a command line interface, there is a built-in utility that you can use. Here are the instructions:
The app will download the file, and import the audio. It will attempt to use any information it can read from the file to set the name of the audiobook and tracks. If you need to add more files to the audiobook, tap on the "Add Files" menu entry in the Audiobook part listing found in the Bookshelf.
You can add the item into your app's Bookshelf by pressing the Add button. This transfers information about the audiobook, such as the list of files/chapters, the summary, and the cover artwork, but does not immediately download the audio file(s). You can download all or part of the book later, from your Bookshelf, when you want to start listening to it.
The JCPL traveling library visits community residences throughout the county to bring library materials and services to those with difficulty accessing a library location. The bookmobile houses 3,000 items including books, large print, audiobooks, movies, and magazines; delivers holds; picks up returns; and offers free Wi-Fi to download digital content with the assistance of our staff.
