FocusWriter is a free and open source word processing application that focuses on keeping distractions away and offers an array of customization options for writers. For those of you who spend a lot of time in front of your PC and often get distracted by everything that's going on in OpenOffice or Microsoft Word, then you may want to give this word processor a go.With FocusWriter, you are given several fewer features and are able to focus solely on the text you're inputting. That is, it doesn't necessarily support all of the graphical features of popular document formats like Word and the layout of the program focuses more on writing text than formatting it with a million icons and an annoying bouncing paperclip.Minimalist and free of distractions with downloadable themesFocusWriter is designed to be lightweight and free of distractions. As for themes, if you make it possible for users to upload their own in some central repository through your website, we could easily share.Another way is to make it able to up- and download themes straight from FocusWriter. Another, maybe more viable option would be to change the file extension to something more easily identifiable with FR, then people could share them through sites like gnome-look or qt-apps.org.
I could change the export file extension in a future version so that somebody else like qt-apps.org could host themes, but there would still be many copies of FocusWriter that export themes with the wrong extension.
I stumbled across your focuswriter after searching for a suitable lightweight, distraction-free writer and I have to say that out of all the writers I tried for windows; Q10, darkroom, textroom, jarte, writeroom, writemonkey and others, i prefer your application.
If I could add a few things i would love to see in focuswriter, they would be;An option to keep the status bar visible, with a configurable color so it is not an eyesore.Adding the current page you are on to the status bar.A list of the most commonly used words in the document. And the ability to change the spacing of the words a little more.
Hi. Thank you very much for FocusWriter, a great program.I have a question:After downloading FocusWriter for Windows (I have Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit), the FocusWriter_1.3.1.zip file extracted to the FocusWriter_1.3.1. folder. But there was no installing at all.The FocusWriter.exe file opens the program directly. So I cannot access FocusWriter through StartButton / All Programs, because no shortcut for FocusWriter has been put there. Is this normal?Or have I just missed the correct way of installing FocusWriter inn Windows?
FocusWriter Where tó download: Type: Wórd processor Developer: Graéme Gott Operating systém: Windows, Mác, Linux Version: 1.6.4 Its not intended for the second and third drafts, when sections need to be moved or cut, paragraphs refined and chapters cross-referenced, which explains the omission of some features weve come to expect from word processing software.
I made a FocusWriter theme! (Well, I put together it anyway). This free theme is for FocusWriter. It is a free distraction-reduced writing program (note: dictionary downloads are now separate) and awesome. ? Works for Windows, Mac and Linux.
Focus Writer can be windowed or full screen, and the ribbon of buttons at the top appears when you mouse over the area. Its basic features include a find tool - you can search for a word in your text and replace it. The themes button allows you to create custom themes, with your own background, font and so on. In preferences you can turn on auto save and also set goals for the day - by time or number of words, useful for professional writers. Rolling the cursor over the bottom of the window brings up another ribbon, with basic file information - title, word count, percentage of daily goal and the time.
Sidenote: For those that are interested, the top screenshot is using a slightly modified version of the wood floors wallpaper (JPG) that I also use as my custom Dashboard background image. The bottom two images are default themes.
It's also worth noting that FocusWriter allows you to make it look pretty much however you want. You can save your themes, and even export them in order to share them with friends. Pick a wallpaper or background colour, set the margins for your text and change the font; there's a lot of possibility here. Save as many themes as you like, but don't waste too much time: you're supposed to be writing.
Setting up Focus Writer to look like the most email-checking computer around is easy; you need only to download this font and combine it with this picture. Create a new theme, and play with the settings to make it look like this:
FocusWriter allows you to customize your environment by creating themes that control the font, colors, and background image to add ambiance. It also features on-the-fly updating statistics, daily goals, multiple open documents, spell-checking, and much more.
FocusWriter is available as an AppImage which means "one app = one file", which you can download and run on your Linux system while you don't need a package manager and nothing gets changed in your system. Awesome!
The FocusWriter AppImage also can be updated using AppImageUpdate. Using this tool, FocusWriter can be updated by downloading only the portions of the AppImage that have actually changed since the last version.
There is a tool that you can use to replace the words. Here the user can simply search a word and replace it. Do you want to create your themes for your writing? FocusWriter allows you to choose and apply the themes that suit your work.
Additionally, users get themes that are personalized and are able to customize them along with various other elements to suit their own preferences. Other features include themes, sound effects as you type and real-time statistics as you are working. It has the function of spell-checking, which always comes in handy, and it works with multiple documents at once as well. This is a generally great program that is perfect for any Windows user, with support for different languages as well.
"Does what it says, and does it well."PROS-It lets you choose a background -It lets you choose your preferred language for spellchecking -It really does let you focus more on your work than everything else -It auto-hides the task-bars, for better concentration -It has themes -It counts wordsCONS-The default 'typewriter sounds' found under preferences can be very annoying at times, and I found it better to disable itSUMMARYThe program does what it says, and does it well. It has a few features of a heavier text editor like OO Writer or MS Word, but it's lightweight like wordpad, but most importantly, you can hide the task-bars to save writing space, instead of having to remove the task-bars which is a pain when you want to change settings.
"Easy to use, no gotchas" PROS- Everything stays out of your way until you need it - Great themes and customization - Portable file formats (Open Document, RTF, plain text) gives you flexibility and choice - Italics and bold actually look like italics and bold, something not always present in other full-screen writing programsCONS- If you don't pay attention, it's easy to miss the menu bar. Just move your mouse pointer to the top of the screen. This isn't really a con, but I'm pointing it out here and in the summary below so that no one else misses it (like the guy that gave this program one star because it had no menu).SUMMARYNOTE: Access the menu bar by moving your mouse cursor to the top of the screen. Everything else is pretty self explanatory. I recommend a good font, such as Deja Vu Sans Mono or Consolas, and choosing a color scheme that's comfortable and readable for long term use. Use a dark background and not-too-bright font faces, bring the font size up a little if you need to, and write.
"I really like this! I'm glad I found it."PROSThis is a small simple program but has great features to help writers. It has the top two things most people want in a word processor; a spell checker and a word counter (counts pages, paragraphs and characters too). It lets you choose your own pictures for the background theme, etc. I like the typewriter sound effect, but it can be turned off if you don't want it. You can set up a word limit per page. I really like that you can set up a daily goal of writing a certain number of words or set up a timer for a certain amount of time allotted for writing. It lets you know what percentage of your daily goal has been met so far. That's cool.CONSNone that I can think of.SUMMARYI almost skipped downloading this program because it only has a 2 and a half star rating. Some guy gave it a one star. I'm glad I checked it out for myself because the guy obviously didn't read what the program is about. The whole point is to hide the menu so the writer can focus on writing; hint thus the name of the program "Focus Writer". The program may have been changed since he downloaded it, because now there is a menu that is hidden at the top, but you can get to it and minimize or exit the program without a problem. This is a good program for basic, quick word processing. But it's really great for people who write and want to improve or increase writing skills. 2b1af7f3a8
